TECHNOLOGY

A catalytic converter is a vehicle emissions control device which converts toxic by-products of combustion to less toxic substances by way of catalysed chemical reactions.  Most of the world strictly regulates vehicle emission levels which is achieved using expensive precious metals and rare earth materials.  These expensive materials drive the cost of catalytic converters up to where they have become a significant cost component of the vehicle.  Worldwide, small motors, because of the cost of catalysts, are unregulated – and as a result contribute 5-15% of urban air pollution.

AETHER’S LOW-COST, BASE METAL CATALYST FOR EMISSIONS ABATEMENT

Aether Catalyst Solutions, Inc. has developed a low-cost, high-performance three-way catalyst to replace the costly precious metal based catalysts used in today’s automotive catalytic converters.  Our technology does not contain any platinum, palladium, or rhodium.  Aether’s catalysts can be processed using simple wash-coating methods that are scalable to high volume and low costs.  We have 3rd party testing to validate internal performance tests of our catalysts.

The precious metals of Rhodium, Palladium and Platinum used in Catalytic Converters were always expensive, but due to a shortage of these materials their prices have sky rocketed over the last few years.  In 2020, Rhodium, Palladium, and Platinum reached price highs of $11,500, $2,781, and $1,017 USD/ounce respectively.  This trend has driven the industry to spend significant resources on trying to put the absolute minimum catalyst in the catalytic converter while still meeting emission requirements.

In contrast, Aether’s material costs in the $10’s of USD per pound which allows to have much more flexibility in the quantity of material that can be used while still maintaining a 90% cost reduction versus the precious metal incumbents. These catalysts also allow small motors emissions abatement to be economically feasible.
